Yeesh. I just get follows from sketchy people who follow 1,000 and are only followed by 5. They don't send me spam links, too. Yuck.

It was an email. I saw a service which does this recently. I didn't include
the name, because I don't want to actually tip off any would-be spammers.

Dave - just curious - on step 2 are they emailing you or DM'ing you? If it's email, how are they getting your email address?

It certainly helps. Some good indications are:
- does the follower have hundreds (or more) of people they're following, but
few followers?
- does the follower have an avatar/image?
- does the follower have only a few, dated tweets on their profile?

I have had zero twitter spam during the entire time I've used Twitter. I'm not sure why, but I think it's because I don't automatically reciprocate follows. The only time I have to endure twitter spam is when the twitter conversation turns to said twitter spam. Is the solution as simple as not following spammers?
