Dave Delaney : Dave Made That: 5 reasons why I hate Twitter

  • michellesullivan · 1 year ago
Dave - ouch! I feel your pain -- or at least as much of it as I can -- I mean, you're the Twitter guy! The Twitter bird should have your face tattoed to its hindfeathers for all the promotion you've done for it! Whatever you decide, it's definitely a shame and goes to show that managing relationships is still key to success, even in a 2.0 world.

Thanks Michelle. Great job at PAB by the way, I listened to the session during my first workout in ages today. I hate working out, but you helped me forget I was at the gym. Thanks. :-)

Awww sweet - thanks Dave. Can you tell I was pressed for time after fumbling around with the laptop connection for awhile? I didn't know I could talk that fast without taking a breath! :) Maffin did a great job of running two laptops and helping me out.

I'm so reading into this that the 'team' still thinks they are operating out of someone's basement. They've not gotten that fact that they could be a billion dollar company if they'd act like one.

Oh, wow. Scary craziness, that's for sure. Twitter's a hub of my network, too--after all this, I'm really making sure I have backup contact info for the great people I've met there.

I'm still not thinking of leaving Twitter, though--just because I'm hoping for all I'm worth that everything will be fixed and work fine...someday...

Come to Identi.ca! The community there reminds me of the early days at Twitter, and I can even put my own version on my own server so I'm in control of my own darn uptime. They're still working out kinks, but I'm extremely impressed. An open source service also won't ban you (and if a bug gets in that does - someone can fix it!). Best part: Iv'e seen Identi.ca's own Evan respond to multiple blog posts mentioning the service in under an hour. That's responsiveness.

I'm there already, but plan to hang out more. Any iPhone apps or
    services?

    Cheers,

Hey, it is open source. If there isn't anything now, someone will make it. Right?

I just left a video comment, but something crapped out in the middle of it, so it didn't embed.

Luckily you can still view it here: http://seesmic.com/video/jpenKP2VQV

I've got more than 6000 tweets to my name and I've shed more than 200 followers through various maintenance routines used by Twitter HQ. Those kinds of things are part of growing up in a web 2.0 world. In that world, I've always seen Twitter as a "social comms play" not a "communications utility" because when you have a utility, you have pipes that work all the time. And if there's a clogged drain, there's a team fixing the problem and sometimes digging up a place to lay another pipe.

Twitter appeals most to people who have never sat next to a green screen on USENET. Twitter provides the greatest invigorating punch to people who have never joined a discussion board. If you haven't bonded to a group powered by a LISTSERV, then Twitter must seem to be the bee's knees. In all those other places, reliability and accountability have been paramount. I don't feel the same community concern on the part of Twitter's developers or funding partners.

    Hi Dave,

You're doing great. I think your negative posts has made them a better company. I salute you for that.

I don't know if I buy this whole Twitter phenomenon. But I'm glad you are getting some value out of it. I think I'm going to see how long I can hold out before using twitter. In the meantime I'm holding on to my hate towards it.
