    Dave... I think you are right. I am quick to forward on a link, but when it comes to my blog, I am looking for comments. So do onto bloggers as you would have done onto your self.

    Sometimes Twitter can give you a good picture of what catches fire... but it's often started with something already written on a blog or other media.

    Well said.

    If only there were studies done on the rise of Twitter versus a decline in commenting.

    What we really need are blogs whose comment forms integrate seamlessly w/ Twitter, Facebook, or any other social networking or bookmarking site we'd like it to.

    Or is there such a tool already? Any developers listening?

    Great post. Another tool that sometimes reduces the amount of comments one might get is the "Share" option with Google Reader. For instance, I just "shared" your post and wrote the following Note with it: "I agree with Dave that when someone comments on a post I've done, it's kind of like "tipping the server" ... or for me, when I get a comment it's like opening a Christmas present every time! (Even if it's one in which the commenter disagrees w/ me.) :) I try to always comment on their blog when a post touches me, even if it is to say "Great post." just to let the writer know I appreciated the time they took to write it.”

    Now, I could have skipped coming over here to write this comment, but I made a point to in order to "tip the server" and let you know that I appreciated your post! :)

    Great post!

    Haha, kidding...sort of. This really is a great post and I agree with what you've said here. I am way more likely to read the blog of someone who hasn't twitted all day rather than someone I can keep up with on Twitter. At the same time, I never know when to shut up my damned self. ;)

    I make both of these mistakes - twitter instead of comment AND twitter all day so I have absolutely nothing left some days to actually blog.

    I'm guilty, Dave. Although I do enjoy reading and commenting on blogs, I have commented less now that I am using Twitter more. New Year's Resolution = Comment more!

    I couldn't agree with this more. I love Twitter, don't get me wrong, but it seems like Twitter can easily replace your blog if you're not careful. I've personally let Twitter go to an extend. I still use it if I have something funny and brief to say, but I don't ever link to my blog on it anymore, and use it more as a Stumble or Digg than anything else.

    I actually just wrote a huge post about this for a guest post on a friends site. It's not up yet, so I'll spare you the link spam, but odd how this was just on my vacant mind, too. I bet we're not the only ones thinking it. That collective conscience is a powerful thing.

    As I said, I really do love Twitter, but I need to concentrate on responding
    to blog posts in comments on that blog more often.

    I agree, I try to find a nice medium...some people i know twitter more than blog so I talk to them there and little things that aren't really blogworthy I'll twitter but i love to blog and that comes first...when I actually have something to say that is :D
