It didn't go down for me, it was my own user error which the co-founder
(Daniel) helped me fix pretty quickly. I first heard about Disqus on
Net@Nite. It's worth a listen: http://twit.tv/natn53. You can also export
your comments, which I recommend doing from time to time.

People like Leo Laporte and Dave Winer are using Disqus too, I trust them.

Dave,

Aren't you concerned about issues like a comment replacement site going down (like it apparently already has for you at least once)? What about ownership, SEO and other implications of comment replacement? Aren't there solutions which provide the desired functionality without having to replace you comment system?

HI David. There's an export function in Disqus. Like LinkedIn, I'm making a habit of d/l my content every so often.

Disagree with the "every blogger" label as it sounds lemmingesq to me. I like some of what Disqus is doing, but what if Disqus goes under or gets bought and shelved by a bigger fish? What happens to your comments then? I hope they continue to develop their API so one could use their system and yet backup all comments to future proof their service.

Hey Kate. Thanks for the comment. I'm thinking if this works well it will be huge for bloggers, but also folks who leave comments. I'm excited about the idea that people can interact and that new conversations can stem from a single comment.

Hi Dave,

I've never really entered the world of blogging, before now. I'm currently rebuiliding the website for a band I work with and we want to heavily incorporate a blog feature into the new site. You seem to know a LOT about this stuff (as always!) so I'll try to keep an eye on your blog world for inspiration and direction.

That's pretty much the reaction I had, too. :) I've always enjoyed that sense of interaction and, I don't know, centeredness that has seemed to be more or less exclusive to LiveJournal because of several things, commenting style being one of them.

So... basically the system Livejournal (and code-offspring) has had for I don't know how many years?...

I honestly never understood why one can't build threads of comments and have email notifications of replies to our comments in other people posts in more places - I was surprised when Blogger started doing notifications. It's quite simply one of the best ways to increase interactivity and that feeling of community...
