Because with this so much schedules life and plans it very hard to take time out to write a separate email, and its easy to tweet someone of update your face book status on the go. Besides the business aspects these sites also work this way. I'm connected no only to current co-workers, but I've been adding a lot of old co-workers too.  Since I changed company 9 years ago, it's a stretch to find people, but LinkedIn is really helping.
