After HOURS of listing calendar events, invites, etc, Meetup completely took our site down because they thought we were soliciting minors?!?! After some emails with Meetup to clarify, they said we could re-post it. We didn't want to re-post until we had clarification on how to word it so it wouldn't be taken down again, (b/c it was pretty shocking that they didn't think it was clear in the first place) but we continue to get no response. Our very first gathering is tomorrow, a Winter Star Party at a local park. I continue to get moms asking why they can't RSVP. All I get is their automated response. Unbelievable. I am furious.

Re: Why You Should Not Use Meetup

Sorry to hear about that Chris.

Re: Why You Should Not Use Meetup

Yeah, meetup.com is a pretty sleazy site. I had signed up, joined a few groups, attended a few events. Then last winter I just lost interest and didn't visit it for about 4 months. I tried to login a week ago only to find out that my account was deleted. Just gone. No warning or anything. I double checked my Gmail history to confirm I was using the correct address, and I was. Stay classy meetup.com.

Re: Why You Should Not Use Meetup

Thanks for the tip Tim.

Re: Why You Should Not Use Meetup

For my events I use amiando. I don't find it easy to use at all. I've been waiting for them to get rid of the bulk and just be simple. Also, I've gone to a couple of meetups where I find out it's not really a get-together of like minded people- but rather a business trying to sell me some products. Waste of time.

Re: Why You Should Not Use Meetup

In addition to not being able to delete your own group, you can spend hours creating content for one and if meetup decides to close your group for whatever reason, you lose all your work!! When I created a group recently, Meetup decided it was not in compliance with their terms of service because its intent was to drive members to another business site. Although this was not a correct assumption, they sent me a generic email informing me that the group would be closed if I did not clarify my group's purpose within 48 hours. This occurred over the holiday weekend when Meetup's offices were closed and before I had the opportunity to respond they had closed my group and purged all content. Even after multiple attempts to reach support to try to resolve the misunderstanding or at least get my content restored, meetup did not even give me the courtesy of a return call. So much for community and collaboration.

Re: Why You Should Not Use Meetup

I use Anyvite and Pingg for events now. That's
because you would go through the lengths of setting up the group, only
to see it costs money after the fact.

Since they now have pricing up front, I can't fault them at this. I'm
glad it was fixed.

I actually don't mind that they charge for their service. Think of all
of the other free services without business models, Twitter comes to
mind.

I only hope they allow Meetup group owners, the one paying the bill,
more power over his or her group.

D

Re: Why You Should Not Use Meetup

It's been a problem since 2005 because in 2005 is when meetup first starting charging the montly $19 extortion. It's all about meetup management maintaining a free flow of fees to ensure their do-nothing jobs. I agree with you that a group name is similar to brand name and should be afforded the same protection so that any Tom, Dick, or Johnny-joined-lately scammer/spammer cannot take over a group.

Re: Why You Should Not Use Meetup

My pleasure. This is actually really helpful information as we are toying with different online "group" meeting places for some specialized Shared Interest Groups we are creating at the Chamber. It looks like the use of Facebook for the Geek Breakfast has been successful.

Re: Why You Should Not Use Meetup

That's horrible! Nobody should go through something like that...seriously.

I've never hosted a group meetup through meetup.com but I've participated in several other groups. I've hosted my own events via Facebook Event pages, an email list I built to host a monthly meetup and via tools like EventBrite. I've never really experimented with others but would love to hear what everyone else is uses and your experience(s)...?
